Tinubu’s Government Pushes for Higher Salaries for Politicians While Nigerians Suffer

The Nigerian government, under President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC, is moving to review and possibly increase the salaries of politicians—including the president, ministers, governors, and lawmakers. This decision has sparked widespread anger across the country.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), led by Mohammed Shehu, argues that politicians’ current salaries are “too small, unrealistic, and outdated.” According to him, President Tinubu earns ₦1.5 million monthly (around $977), while ministers take home less than ₦1 million. Shehu insists these amounts are not enough for leaders overseeing a country of over 200 million people.

He compared this with heads of agencies and the Central Bank Governor, who reportedly earn 10–20 times more than ministers or the Attorney-General, claiming that the imbalance is “unfair.”

By any measure, Nigeria is in crisis. Inflation has gutted family incomes. Food prices climb daily. Millions of young people wander jobless. Workers are still begging for a ₦70,000 minimum wage that government claims it cannot pay. Yet, in the middle of this suffering, President Bola Tinubu’s APC government has chosen to prioritize something else: increasing the salaries of politicians.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) argues that the president’s monthly salary of ₦1.5 million and ministers’ salaries of less than ₦1 million are “too small and outdated.” Chairman Mohammed Shehu even suggests these officials cannot be expected to give their best unless they are paid more.

This is not just tone-deaf — it is insulting. How can leaders who live in government mansions, enjoy fleets of official cars, foreign medical treatment, security escorts, and endless allowances still cry that their salaries are not enough? Meanwhile, ordinary Nigerians, who get none of these luxuries, are told there is no money for a living wage.

Let’s be clear: this debate is not about fairness. It is about a ruling elite protecting its comfort while ignoring the hardship of the people. If the government truly believed in equity, the first step would be to ensure civil servants and workers receive decent pay before politicians demand more for themselves.

The truth is that the APC government appears completely disconnected from the realities of ordinary Nigerians. It preaches sacrifice to citizens but practices extravagance at the top. When Nigerians are tightening their belts to survive, their leaders are loosening theirs to make space for fatter paychecks.

This moment should have been an opportunity to show empathy, to stand with struggling families, and to prioritize the welfare of the masses. Instead, Tinubu’s government has chosen to show once again that in Nigeria, politics is not about service — it is about self-enrichment.

Until leaders begin to feel the pain of the people, governance will remain a betrayal. Sadly, this latest move confirms that the APC government is not sensitive to the plight of ordinary Nigerians.

Nigerian Need a real Change and Not a Renew Hopelessness
