Who Are The Ibibos




The Ibibio people, who speak a Niger-Congo language called Ibibio or Efik-Ibibio. History has it that Ibibo people have been in the present day Nigeria since 7,000 BCE. 

They were "The Man's World kind of society" and are believed to have first settled in a place they called Ibom, which  was the name of their an  ancestor.


The Ibibo people are an ethnic group predominantly found in southern part of Nigeria, specifically in the Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, Rivers and Abia States. 


They are related to the Ibibio people and speak a related language known as Ibibio-Efik. Annang and Oron. The Ibibo people have a rich cultural heritage that includes dance, music, art, and traditional attire. 

They are predominantly farmers and fisherm ween, but some also engage in trading and handicrafts. 

Ibibo culture is the traditional culture of the Ibibo people, who primarily live in the southern part of Nigeria, particularly in the Akwa Ibom and Rivers State. They have their unique customs and traditions that have been passed down through generations. 

Music and dance are an essential part of Ibibo culture. Various musical instruments, such as drums, flutes, and xylophones, are used during festivals and ceremonies. 

The most significant festival celebrated in the Ibibo culture is the Ekpe and Ekpo festival. It is a celebration of the new year and is marked by dances, music, and the wearing of masks by the men. 


The Ibibo culture has also been influenced by Christianity, so many of their cultural practices have been modified to align with Christian beliefs. For example, traditional marriage ceremonies have been modified to include a church wedding ceremony as well.

Hospitality is highly valued in the Ibibo culture. They place a great emphasis on welcoming strangers and ensuring that visitors are comfortable and provided for. 

They are also known for their expertise in crafts such as pottery, weaving, and carving. 

In conclusion, the Ibibo culture is rich in customs, traditions, music, and dance. They value hospitality and are experts in various crafts. Christianity has also had an influence on their cultural practices.
